Washday Alton NH
A washline on a country porch in Alton, NH.
I was driving home from college in the late 1970s when I came upon a home with the most beautiful and colorful washline I had ever seen. I spent about 30 minutes photographing the porch and washline. At the time I was taking my very first class in photography. I discovered as I experimented with my images, that I was interested in taking my images to a new level where small, or even large, changes could enhance the final product. I began to experiment with different ways to capture the images, from different angles to fogging the camera lens, to smearing a filter with vaseline to emphasize specific portions of the image. Likewise I experimented with different ways to print the images. This particular image is a color photograph printed through a piece of textured glass. I loved the effect, and used it for a number of my images. I would create the image, and scan it at a high resolution for output in a signed limited edition.

The image is also produced as a more affordable unsigned open-edition. The open-edition prints are designed for people who love the image but don't feel the need to purchase a signed print which is considered a longer-term investment.

Wayne King is a North American "mutt" with a family heritage that winds through his Native American, Canadian, and US Colonial roots. His love for the philosophical founding documents and sacred stories and dreams of the Iroquois Confederacy, the US Revolutionary Founders, and the sacred artists, musicians, writers, and poets whose works and images are a celebration of the circle of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into what he calls "a dreamlike quintessentialism". The final images are designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King seeks to take the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope and dreams.
